Durero

The main goal of the project is develop target sustainability indices based on the development of specific water resources balances through the compilation of water available data in the transboundary Duero (Douro) River Basin district (DRBD), which runs through Spain and Portugal. The diagnoses on water resources and sustainability indices will be used to highlight the best strategies to prevent water scarcity WS in the DRBD. Moreover, it will not only show the present WS strategies in the DRBD but it will foresee an strategic issue such as the effect on Portuguese water resources if a given WS measures  is adopted in Spain. The results are expected to be used as a practical framework for the development of the next River Basin Management Plans.

Results will be supported by uncertainty and risk analysis and available data will be fitted into the framework of the System of Economic and Environmental Accounts for Water (SEEAW) and included into ongoing projects which tackle water scarcity, droughts and desertification.  Target sustainability indices will be set off regarding water efficiency and ecosystem services under a specific context. It is foreseen that the operation decision support tools would help DRBD stakeholders and policy makers in planning the Innovation Strategies for Smart Specialization at the region level. Furthermore, they will add a valuable input to the 2012 Policy Review and the Blueprint.
